Simply put, Looking Glass isn't cooperating with the SecurityCraft mod that you may or may not be aware of. It works fine when I'm in single player, but all I receive is a black feed when I install it on a Forge server.

I'm really interested in using remote viewing for the map I'm constructing, however. I haven't found any other mods or resources online for 1.7.10 that do anything like Looking Glass, so I still want to use it.

Question: How would I use Looking Glass to set up a CCTV-like system? How much Java would I need to know? Would I need to write my own module?

(For reference, here is the map I'm working on. It's essentially a Jurassic-Park-like world, but using the "Fossils and Archeology Revival" mod: http://fossils-archeology.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:50749)

Might be a substantial amount of java to make your own mod. If you donb't know any, LookingGlass is probably a bad place to start.

In terms of usage, make sure that LookingGlass is installed on both the client and the server. It is needed in both places or it won't work.
Otherwise, I think the most recent version of LookingGlass doesn't agree with SecurityCraft. Presumably SecurityCraft was doing some kind of reflection and soemthing changed. You might try going back a step on LookingGlass if you want to use SecurityCraft.

Thanks for the reply!

I've double checked all those points already. I've gone back releases on both Looking Glass and SecurityCraft, and made sure that it was installed on both ends. The issue isn't that it doesn't work with SecurityCraft...it's that, for whatever reason, it won't work on my SMP server.

What sort of options do I have then for CCTV-like behavior on my server? I've only seen one other mod advertised, and it's no longer hosted anywhere.

Good you checked them. :) It's just always good to make sure the simplest and most common things are checked first. :P

I'm afraid I don't know. If you are interested in building something what is your level of Java knowledge?

Truthfully, basically nonexistent. I've worked with the files in WordPress and Minecraft installations and run servers, but I haven't written or compiled anything besides html.

I am in my mid thirties with a few degrees, so I'm confident I can learn what I need to. Where should I start?

If you at least know a little Javascript you could probably manage.
Or at least, manage to start modding.

Get a workspace set up (note: you may not be able to do this with 1.7.10) and work on some basic blocks and items, see if you can manage that first.

Thanks! Most of that stuff looks familiar already. I've have a go at it, and I'll post here again when I have a more specific question about making a related module.
