That Felt Good (Mystcraft 0.12.3.02)

I just pushed the first Mystcraft build since November, and it felt really cathartic. 😀

I must admit, I was a little worried about whether I’d remember how to do anything, particularly with the Gradle build system. Turns out, I don’t seem to have forgotten any of it. Which is good, because lots of it has forgotten itself.

For starters, I had to set my dev environment up on my new desktop PC. Fortunately, I remember all of the setup commands (probably through having to run them so much in the past) and had this up and running in little to no time. I also have the old setup running on the older computer beside me, so I can reference it easy for the really specific values and things (Eclipse run configurations, anyone?).
Then I went and did a bit of debugging and fixing. The longest challenge was finding the fastest way to check a srgname these days. Still MCP bot, so I had to install an IRC client (this computer is REALLY new).
I made my fix and went to build… and it failed on trying to pull the LookingGlass API from the maven. A little investigating revealed that my maven repo server was just gone. I spoke with Nick over at ReasonantHost and he’s already getting me fixed up with a new one. Thanks guys!
Regardless, I was still out a maven repo, so I just manually bypassed that and ‘viola!’, I have a shiny new build.

It wasn’t easy, and that’s what made it feel so good. It wasn’t really hard, either, which probably helped.

Now, the build itself is fairly minimal; I just made a single change to try and deal with an error I’ve only ever seen once. The idea was that it was a reasonably straightforward issue that I could tackle directly and push a build for. My goal was and remains to get back into modding at a reasonably slow pace. Leaping in head first is fun, but I don’t want to fry myself again so soon after returning.

So here’s to the return of Mystcraft and LookingGlass.

EDIT: Whoops! Missed my usual end text:
Mystcraft is available from CurseForge.

      1. If you skip 1.8.9, you might need to pick one of the 1.9.x versions — so far, the field seems a little scattered among them. But it might have settled a bit by the time you get around to the actual port.

        1. Looks like it’s settled on 1.9.4, probably because Mojang’s floating snapshots for 1.10.

      2. I obviously don’t want to sound like I don’t appreciate that you just came back to this mod, but roughly how long would you estimate before the first builds start coming on the new version? 3 months? 1 month? 6 months? 2 days? I really can’t wait until Mystcraft updates, it’s been my favorite mod since MC 1.4!

        1. Thanks! I’m glad you like Mystcraft so much. 🙂
There have been a number of factors that have slowed my return to modding, one of the largest being having a full-time job.
The most important thing at the moment for Mystcaft development is that I actually feel like I can return to it now, which was the point of this post. The slowness is mostly because there’s now a lot of things I can return to doing and it takes me some time to catch up with them all, especially since I only have so much time to do so now.
I really appreciate your patience as I get back into the groove of things. There probably won’t be a build up in 2 days, but I’m hoping by the end of the month. 🙂 I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try.

  1. Warm welcome back! I can relate to the feeling of being able to work on your code projects after being so busy for so long. Best regards

  2. Awesome! Things like this are always great to hear as a Mystcraft fan 🙂

    Keep up the good work!

  3. Hi, bit of problem with the forum and wiki atm:
    SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Table ‘./xcompwiz_phpbb3/phpbb_sessions’ is marked as crashed and should be repaired [145]

  4. Any way you could change the notebook to be more easily used? Like a list or something. When I make ages I like to see what options I have, and hovering mouse over pages gets bothersome fast. Perhaps an extra tab that just has a list of pages you have or something similar? Just so you could see as many at once as possible.

  5. I was going to use the bug tracker, but the page didn’t load. Do you have a fix for being kicked every time you try and trade with an archivist villager in multiplayer?

      1. I don’t seem to recall this issue. Please report the bug either on the bug tracker on on the Mystcraft forums. I’d be happy to take a look. 🙂

  6. Happy to see this again! I just remembered this mod from my days in olde minecraft. Glad to see its making a come back, can’t wait to drag my friends into a unstable world. Welcome back Xcomp!
